Turns out that it's Hire More Women Prisoners

I am watching Sherlock and trying to work while my wife is out. But I am drunk and stressing about becoming a dad.

Imagine trying to raise a child!

Drunken Dad Fear

When did I grow up?

I'm not going to sugarcoat the pill, being a dad is discovering a whole set of panic-inducing fears you didn't know you could have. It was a nasty surprise for someone who's pretty laid-back like me, and I'm trying to guess if it will fit into your natural paranoia or expand it further.

My main fear is navigating the rise of fascism as a parent!

It's gonna be a hell of a thing

This is a concern, but not nearly the main one for the first 2 years or so, where you will doubt the structural integrity of your offspring on a daily basis.

Also you're all white, so the impact of the current fascist wave is mitigated on your family. And remember a kid is for life, so by the time your kid grows up in about 20 years, the political landscape is likely to be entirely different.

well, I am worried about the ways that intersections work, and the way my privilege can hurt a child in complicated ways

Road intersections? And you're completely fine if you know what privilege means in the first place.

Uh, intersections of oppression and privilege

Oh. So yeah, you'll be worrying about road intersections before this kind of intersection.

Single centralized archive sounds bad.

Not necessarily, if it was world-centralized, then countries would have to cooperate to maintain it and no local government may be able to tamper with it on its own, especially if it was append-only.

or we could copy it to multiple places! Everyone could probably store every single book ever and most of the music

How do you choose what you keep in “most”?

Ack! I misclicked dislike!

Keep what you want! It's your own music! You can literally pick most by getting it from friends until you've expanded your storage capacity as much as you can!

I think too much about how to map Factorio robots to untrusted unreliable WAN and that ways in which other pieces are internal services

some of you wouldn’t get hired for your current role again
QFT

Hey! Remember that character you were curious about?
Really cursory development, then dies!

Unlikely Avengers would be that bad

This is terrifying!

The hardest part about computer security, is that we keep using tech that is only half finished, and building our society on it

How would we know it is half-finished if we don't use it in a real-world scale?

You fix it after you see how it's broken

This is a job for... someone else.

We no longer have computers.

Marco R. doesn't like this.

We've talked a bunch about hacking, and they're really good at reading documentation and learning from it! Would be an asset to any dev team!

These weren't invented in the 90s, these were invented by the 90s

The decade rose from the grave and made them

People who were most culturally impacted by the 90's are now rich enough to leave their mark on the world, see all the 90's movie reboots.

30 year nostalgia cycle

Definitely. These are Rob Liefeld's pants, just in the new reality we've created

The 90s reaches out to us and plays Smashmouth as something we apparently enjoyed!

What's your own nostalgia period?

Hating highschool?

Realising things are getting better?

Roberta Williams? Old School Unix?

I mostly don't *do* nostalgia - but I also keep love for things. But my childhood is weird...

I am currently playing Monkey Island because I miss other people's childhoods... I also am thinking of replaying Kings Quest 6, but not Kings Quest I

I don't know - nostalgia is weird

I personally don't miss any particular period as a whole but I have a specific fondness for circa-1998 movies and Nu Metal that I haven't had for more recent movies or music.

There’s a French saying for that: “Les cordonniers sont les plus mal chaussés” (Shoe makers wear the worst shoes).

I've heard "The cobbler's children wear no shoes" but in this case - I'd think they'd want to test their docs!

It's so their site will remain accessible even when they break their software :P
