Ah! A #FreeBSD security advisory. Time for some updates. Is it just me or do they issue these more often these days? I think that's a good thing. 😈
Is it appropriate for me to air productive criticism I heard of why a fairly large team did not go with #FreeBSD in production, despite domain knowledge by the admins?

Working on resolving the merge conflict in #HardenedBSD 12-STABLE along with backporting the #FreeBSD ASR work. Hoping to push out the fixes by the end of this weekend.
Anyone have a working example of funopen(3)?

Had enough of using #twm to debug #hikari on #wayland (had to use it because of keybinding overlap). So I implemented a new mode where I can instruct the compositor to redirect all keyboard input to a single client. Clients can not trigger this on their own, the compositor manages it. #FreeBSD

@farhan Currently there are not many compositors out there. #sway is probably the most popular one beside the obvious candidate #gnome. There are a couple of other ones but I don't know how well supported they are. #sway has #FreeBSD packages.

Funny how I find working with an X11 window manager almost unbearable now. After using #wayland as my daily driver for a couple of weeks now, X just feels sluggish and clunky. #FreeBSD

Ah, first success with the #herbstluftwm inspired tiling engine for #hikari on #wayland, this could become a really neat mechanism for letting users define their own tiling layouts in the config, rather than hard coding them into the compositor :3 #FreeBSD

More pondering. I think I have found a good way on how to model tiling layouts in the #hikari config. Inspiration is coming from #herbstluftwm. Hopefully I can represent everything I need in plain TOML. Going to do some experiments next week. #wayland #FreeBSD

Currently pondering configuration for #hikari. TOML or Lua. The latter would allow me to let the user define new layouts and actions. #wayland #FreeBSD

Plan for today and tomorrow: re-implement #hikari group handling for the #wayland implementation. I'm also planning to redesign the whole tiling engine next week. Plans are to make it way more flexible than it is in the moment. #FreeBSD #BSD

After writing a window manager for #X11 I must say that the "X just works" argument is kind of shoddy. The way X gets graphics onto the screen is… atrocious and most of the graphic issues we are dealing with today exist because of how X "works" and people are happily ignoring that. #wayland is a great opportunity to move things into a better direction, yes adoption is slow, but that's kind of because of us isn't it? #BSD #Linux #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD

After building #Xwayland from MASTER things look great for #wayland under #FreeBSD for me. But after 15-30 minutes i get random crashes or freezes of the hole graphic stack. 😔

#FreeBSD question:
Why does adding a whole bunch of hw.psm.synaptics.* settings in /etc/sysctl.conf enable a really annoying "feature" where, if you don't use the touchpad for 3 seconds, it "turns off" until you try moving the pointer again on the touchpad & THEN it turns the touchpad back on?

Removing the hw.psm.synaptics.* settings from /etc/sysctl.conf & rebooting disables this odd behavior.
Have been running my own email system for around 6 months now with Postfix/SpamAssassin on #FreeBSD. Might be overkill, and I find myself having to restart postfix on occasion (not sure why?)

Considering trying out #OpenBSD's smtpd. Or just using Fastmail?

I'm now at the point where almost every component of my #wayland stack on #FreeBSD is hand-built. Not exactly what I was aiming for but I think that some of that knowledge has to go upstream back into the ports at some point. Probably should consider organizing a #wayland #FreeBSD hackathon.

Back in the 90s a lot of us were drawn towards #Linux even though people told us it was inconvenient. We used it nevertheless, whether it was out of curiosity, counter-culture or simply because of "bragging factor". By doing that it was normalized as an OS, things improved, more software was written for it. These days it feels like the BSDs are experiencing the same kind of development. I think this is great! #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #DragonflyBSD #HardenedBSD #BSD 🎉

I'm running a hackathon at #vBSDCon 2019. Seriously they're letting me do this. Come spend a day with me learning the ins and outs of building software on #OpenBSD and creating and maintaining ports. Even if you're not an OpenBSD person, lots to learn about software portability and practice.

With the release of #hikari 1.0 I will completely transition over to #wayland with the X version becoming legacy. I know this is a drastic cut given how young the project still is, but after working with both X and Wayland I think that the latter is clearly the way to go for many reasons. I will keep #FreeBSD as the primary platform since it's my daily driver.

@CyReVolt I meet a lot of motivated people wanting to switch to a #BSD for one reason or another. Most of the time I tell them that it comes with certain sacrifices. Back in the 90s it was the same issue with #Linux. But people started to scratch their itches over the time. I don't really think of #FreeBSD as a desktop OS but rather a server OS I'm running on my laptop ^^.

Huh, looks like the swaylock on #FreeBSD has basically no additional dependencies. I think I'll implement all the needed protocols as a next step to support it in #hikari. I REALLY need a screen locker to be able to use my compositor at work. #wayland #wlroots

Looks like building #FreeBSD release artifacts, like the memstick image, is broken when WITHOUT_EFI is set in src.conf(5).
:freebsd: #FreeBSD is a royal pain in the ass to get set up on a laptop, IMO. I'll keep plugging along at it, but I'm getting frustrated.

There are very few guides out there that explain the best practices for desktop/laptop :freebsd: as far as settings configuration and such. Even :archlinux: has an easier time getting things to just work.

The issue isn't "what package to install" but rather "how many different .rc files need to be tweaked, and how".

@pamela I am not even sure it makes sense to clean this up. ioctls grew other time and they have to be handled by some userland utility. I am not sure it would make sense to restructure them and the kernel interface, either... but nice project!

What annoys me with #FreeBSD's ifconfig is that it may start shell scripts on ifconfig up or down
